In laser hair removal, the wavelength determines how selectively the energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle versus the surrounding skin. The right wavelength delivers energy to the follicle while sparing the skin; the wrong one wastes energy or causes damage.
The 808nm diode wavelength is well absorbed by melanin while penetrating deeply enough to reach the follicle, which is why diode is the workhorse of professional hair removal. Its selectivity makes it fast and effective on coarse and dark hair.
IPL is not a single wavelength but a broad spectrum filtered to a range. This makes it less selective than diode for hair removal but more versatile — the same platform can be filtered for rejuvenation, pigmentation and vascular treatments.
On the Fitzpatrick scale, lighter skin types tolerate a wider range of wavelengths. Darker skin types need longer wavelengths and aggressive cooling to protect the skin. If you treat a diverse client base, prioritise a system with adjustable parameters and strong cooling.
